The Difference Between Breeches and Jodhpurs

The word breeches has long been used to describe several types of men’s lower body outer garments and undergarments from classical Roman dress through the eighteenth century, when knee-length breeches were replaced by pants or trousers in everyday wear. They are also sometimes known as jodhpurs (informally, “breeks”).

Riding breeches were formerly made of thick cavalry twill with flared thighs—called balloon legs—to accommodate the rider’s knees when in the saddle. Modern fabrics that stretch in all directions have eliminated the need for such excess material, and breeches for riding typically fit much closer to the leg and are less baggy.

Dress breeches were traditionally worn for evening or formal servants’ livery, but they can now be found in casual clothing stores. They are often made of velvet or barathea wool and have a front flap called a fall that can be fastened with buttons, ties, or buckles. They can be tight-fitting, or looser at the knees and hips—a more relaxed look that is particularly popular with women. They can have a full seat, which is a patch of leather going up to cover the knee area, or half chaps, which are strips of leather that go around the outside of the leg to protect it from the stirrup leathers and chafing.

Breeches for men are a type of pants that can be tight-fitting or more loose-fitting, and they may have pockets, zip pockets, or belt loops. They may also be hemmed to be shorter, or they can have a waistband that can be cinched with a belt. They are typically paired with a blazer or suit jacket, though they can be worn with a shirt and tie for an informal look.

The terms jodhpurs and breeches are often confused, as they were both created with the same purpose: to be worn while riding horses. The main difference is the length of the legs—jodhpurs are short and finish around the ankle, while breeches extend down to mid-calf. Jodhpurs are usually kept tight at the bottom of the leg with Velcro or elasticated cuffs, while breeches have looser cuffs.

Men’s breeches can also be trimmed with embroidery or other embellishments. For example, they can be embroidered with the initials or name of a horse or other animal. Some are even embroidered with lace, which adds to their romantic charm. They can also be adorned with contrasting buttons, or with a patch or badge representing a particular hobby or profession. They can even be decorated with a sash or other accessory representing a country or region of origin. The most important thing to remember when choosing a pair of breeches is that they should be comfortable and fitted, but not too snug or tight. A pair of breeches that is too tight can be uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time and will cause chafing on the skin. On the other hand, a pair that is too baggy will be difficult to move in when riding a horse or doing other physical activities.
